FOS3 and Factored Load

FOS3 and Factored Load

I need to use FOS3 for submission. Do I then input the factored load from ULS combo (controlling case: 1DL 1.5W) or just the working load (controlling case: 1DL 1W)?

Dear Frank,

Thank you for your enquiry. There are two ways to meet FOS3 in the program.

  1. You may choose the design method with FOS3. Then the input load will be working load since the program will include 3x safety factor itself.
  2. If you choose the design method without FOS3, the safety factor for concrete related failure is 1.5. You may need to multiply the input load by 2 yourself to meet 3x safety factor.

It is suggested to apply method 1 directly for your submission. Please let us know if you have further question.

Thanks,

Dear Daniel, Thank you for your explanation. Another separate question - If I do not require FOS3, then is it okay to use either EN1992-4 Anchor Design or ETAG 001 Annex C (both has 1.5 safety factor for material) with the input as ULS factored load. Thanks, Frank

Dear Frank,

Sure. If you have a designated safety factor, you may apply either one of the codes and multiply the input load by yourself given that a 1.5 material safety factor is included.

Thanks,
Daniel
