Passive firestop protection plays a vital role in protecting escape routes for occupancies. It also provides safe access routes for firefighters by slowing down the spread of fire, heat, smoke and toxic gases to minimize damage to the whole building when a fire occurs. Hence a firestop system should be clearly specified in the early design phase to achieve optimum performance. On the other hand, firestop inspection with proper documentation can ensure the expected fire performance to be realized in buildings. In reality, the firestop system may not be installed correctly due to site constraints or poor workmanship. Thus, inspection for firestop system components and installation procedures are critical. Proper documentation can keep the projects organized and ensure compliant reporting. It is essential for the government, designers and inspectors to set up an effective inspection mechanism with reference to the international practices and experience.
