Tensile and shear load test

In Hong Kong, proof load testing of post-installed anchors is typically carried out in accordance with PNAP APP-169, which requires tensile and/or shear proof load testing depending on the project requirements. The acceptance criteria and the type of proof load test to be conducted should be determined by the Registered Structural Engineer (RSE) or relevant specialist.

As described in PNAP APP-169, the proof load is generally 1.5 times the recommended load. Rather than reproducing the actual design actions, the test tends to be checking quality of the anchor installation.

In our recommendation, tensile proof load test shall adequately review the workmanship of installed anchor disregarding the direction of the actual design force.
